The Basics

Sales Tax at Odes UTV LLC

🏛️

Why Sales Tax Is Collected

Odes UTV LLC is required by California state law to collect sales tax on taxable transactions. As a licensed dealer operating in Riverside, CA, we remit all collected taxes directly to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA). This is a legal obligation — not a discretionary fee.

📊

How It Appears on Your Invoice

Sales tax is always clearly itemized as a separate line on your invoice. You will never find tax buried inside the vehicle price or hidden in other fees. What you see is exactly what you pay — with every charge broken out for your full review before payment is collected.

Step by Step

How Sales Tax is Calculated

The Tax Calculation Process

Understanding how your sales tax is determined — from purchase price to your final invoice total.

01

Determine Taxable Amount

The taxable base is the purchase price of the vehicle, parts, or accessories before any discounts applied. Trade-in allowances, where applicable, may reduce the taxable amount.

02

Apply Applicable Rate

California's base sales tax rate is applied, plus any applicable district taxes for the delivery or registration location. Rates vary by county and city — Riverside County rates apply for local transactions.

03

Itemized on Invoice

The calculated tax amount is added as a clear, separate line item on your final invoice. You review and approve your full invoice — including tax — before any payment is collected.

Sales Tax FAQ

1
📍How is the tax rate determined for my purchase?

In California, sales tax on a vehicle is generally based on the location where the vehicle is registered or delivered — not necessarily where Odes UTV LLC is located. California's statewide base rate is 7.25%, with additional district taxes layered on top depending on your city and county.

  • For local Riverside deliveries, the combined Riverside rate applies
  • For deliveries to other California counties, the rate for that county applies
  • For out-of-state deliveries, California tax may not apply, but your home state's use tax may
Our team calculates the correct rate for your specific transaction at the time of invoicing. You will always review the tax amount before making payment.
2
🚚I'm buying from out of state — do I pay California sales tax?

If you are purchasing a vehicle from Odes UTV LLC and having it shipped to another state, California sales tax may not apply — however, your home state's use tax likely will. Use tax is a tax imposed by your state on out-of-state purchases of taxable items used within that state.

  • You are responsible for reporting and paying any use tax owed in your home state
  • Odes UTV LLC cannot provide tax advice for out-of-state transactions
  • We recommend consulting a tax professional in your state before purchasing
Call us at +1 (303) 269-1838 before placing an out-of-state order so we can discuss the documentation requirements for your specific situation.
3
📄How do I claim a tax exemption?

To claim a sales tax exemption, you must notify Odes UTV LLC before your purchase is finalized and provide the appropriate documentation. We cannot retroactively apply exemptions after a taxed transaction has been completed.

  • Resellers: Submit a completed California Resale Certificate (BOE-230)
  • Government agencies: Provide a valid government purchase order or exemption letter
  • Nonprofits: Provide your CDTFA-issued exemption confirmation
  • Agricultural: Provide documentation of qualifying agricultural business use
All exemption certificates are retained on file. Submitting a fraudulent exemption certificate is a violation of California law.
4
💰Can I negotiate or waive the sales tax?

No. Sales tax is a legally mandated government charge — it is not a fee set by Odes UTV LLC and cannot be negotiated, discounted, or waived. We are legally required to collect it on taxable transactions and remit it to the CDTFA.

  • Sales tax cannot be waived by our team under any circumstances
  • Sales tax cannot be absorbed into the vehicle price
  • Requesting to have tax removed from your invoice is not possible
Important: Any dealer that offers to "hide" or waive sales tax without a valid exemption certificate is operating illegally. Odes UTV LLC will always collect tax as required by law.
5
🔄What happens to sales tax if I return a vehicle?

If an approved return is processed, the sales tax collected on that transaction will be refunded along with the eligible purchase amount, subject to our Returns & Refunds Policy. We will file the appropriate credit memo with the CDTFA.

  • Tax refunds are processed alongside the vehicle refund per our return timeline
  • Partial returns (e.g., partial accessory returns) will receive a proportional tax credit
  • Non-refundable fees such as documentation and delivery charges are not eligible for tax credits
For all return-related questions, please review our Returns & Refunds Policy or call us at +1 (303) 269-1838.
6
🧾Does sales tax apply to parts and accessories?

Yes — parts, accessories, and merchandise purchased from Odes UTV LLC are subject to California sales tax at the applicable combined rate for your purchase location. This applies whether you purchase in-store or through our website.

  • All tangible goods are taxable under California law
  • Tax is calculated on the selling price of the item before shipping
  • Shipping and handling fees may or may not be taxable depending on the transaction structure
7
⚖️Trade-ins and sales tax — how does it work?

In California, when you trade in a vehicle as part of a purchase, the trade-in value may reduce the taxable purchase price of your new vehicle. This is one of the financial benefits of trading in at the time of purchase.

  • Tax is calculated on the net purchase price after trade-in allowance is applied
  • Trade-in values must be agreed upon and documented on the sales contract
  • Cash back or accessories included in a trade may affect the calculation
Talk to our sales team about how a trade-in can affect your total tax liability and overall purchase price.
8
📞I have a specific tax question — what should I do?

While our team is knowledgeable about how sales tax applies to our transactions, we are not tax advisors and cannot provide legal tax counsel. For complex or specific tax situations, we recommend consulting a qualified tax professional or the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration (CDTFA).
